SSV AFL – Two CCS Teams Reach State Semi Finals!
Catholic College Sale has celebrated some outstanding results in the recent School Sport Victoria (SSV) Football Finals, with two of our teams winning their state quarter finals to finish equal third in Victoria.
Intermediate Girls
Our Year 9/10 Girls defeated Berwick Secondary College in a thriller, 5.7.37 to 4.8.32, with the match going into overtime before CCS secured victory. Olivia Collins kicked two goals, with Liliah Carroll, Lily Flanagan and Ella Higgins also hitting the scoreboard.
In the semi final, a strong Rowville side proved too tough in the challenging heat, with injuries also taking their toll. Despite the result, our girls fought bravely with Brooke Kelly, Taylah Mizzi, Ebony Silvester, Lailah Carroll, Olivia Collins, Meika Stefanetti and Ceinna McKinnon-Searle among the best performers.
Senior Boys
Our Year 11/12 Boys came agonisingly close to a semi final berth, going down to Frankston High School 6.6.42 to 6.11.47. After a lightning start, including two early goals from Harper Walker, Frankston steadily worked their way back into the contest. In a heart-stopping finish, CCS had a shot after the siren that narrowly missed, leaving us just short of victory.
Goal scorers were Jack McQuillen (2), Harper Walker (2), Jac Williams and Darcy Scott. Best players were Harper Walker, Darcy Scott, Will Burgiel, Jack McQuillen and Fabian Vera.
Year 8 Boys
Our Year 8 Boys also progressed to the state semi finals after an impressive two-point win over Frankston High School in the quarters. A dominant second quarter (five goals to three points) set up the victory, with Pat Centra starring in the midfield and Ryder Gieschen superb across half-back.
Like the Intermediate Girls, the boys then faced Rowville in the semi final, but despite their best efforts went down to a strong opponent. Best players were Patrick Centra, Jack Bartlett, Ryder Gieschen, Nash Monaghan, Michael Gee and Lachie McMaster.
A huge thank you to Mr Danny Butcher (Intermediate Girls and Senior Boys) and Mr Rod Curtis (Year 8 Boys) for their time, dedication and enthusiasm in coaching our teams this season. We are incredibly fortunate to have such supportive and inspiring sports leaders mentoring our students.
