2023 Marist Basketball Carnival

2023 Marist Basketball Carnival

Later this month Catholic College Sale will compete at the 31st annual Australian Marist Basketball Carnival. This year’s carnival will be hosted by Sacred Heart College, Adelaide (SA) and will run from Sunday March 26th to Thursday March 30th. The tournament was set to take place in 2020, before the COVID pandemic hit Australian shores, causing its postponement. The College will send a boys and girls team to this year’s event, which will feature as many as 30 other teams from around the country.

The carnival is a welcome return to the CCS sports calendar, with both staff and students supremely excited at the prospect of traveling interstate and competing against schools from around the country. CCS will face some strong opposition in both the girls and boys draws, with schools such as Marcellin College Bulleen, Assumption College Kilmore and hosts Sacred Heart College expected to be high finishers by the time the Carnival concludes.

The girls’ team will be led by Kate Harrington and Tiffany Gieschen, while Harper Fraser and Zach Felsbourg will captain the boys team.

Training has been conducted on-site at the College’s Bishop Phelan Stadium, before and after school over the past few weeks. The teams comprise of several students who have representative experience in the Country Basketball League (CBL) and Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL).

Mr Josh Stubbe and Mr Ron Crawford will coach the Boys’ team, while Ms Kelly Burgiel will coach the Girls’ team.

Preparations for the Carnival have gone smoothly. Students have been selling raffle tickets to assist with airfare and accommodation costs. A number of local businesses have come forward to contribute raffle prizes in support of the team. The College wishes to thank the following businesses for their generosity:

Sporting Legends, Carmody’s Fuel & Tyre Service, Scarlett & Grace, Redd Catt, Intersport and CJ Office Choice.
